Mountain Biking History

Others say it was the Velo Cross Club of France that started mountain biking.  The club was comprised of 20 young bikers from Paris, who between 1951 and 1956 developed a sport that resembles present day Mountain Bike Frames.

It could have also been John Finley Scott, who was the first Mountain Bike Frames in the U.S.  In 1953 he constructed what he called a “Woodsie Bike”, using a diamond frame, balloon tires, flat handle bars,  and cantilever brakes.  He was more than 20 years  ahead of his time.  Even though he remained an off road enthusiast, there were many at that time who didn’t share that same passion.

Today, we believe that the history of the Mountain Bike Frames is most apparent in Northern California.  There are a few areas that claim to be the first community for mountain biking, although each and every history book will tell you Marin County.

The sport of mountain biking has taken many twists and turns over the last several hundred years.  Even though there are many that say different things about the history and the beginning, we know one thing  for sure – one thing has led to another and the sport of mountain biking was born.

There is a lot of history and information out there in regards to the history and origins of mountain biking, with some being recognized and some that  depends on who has the best firm of public relations.

Scott mountain bike Questions

Best Make for a Ladies Mountain Bike?

What do you think is the best brand for a mountain bike. I am looking to pay around £500-£600.

I would preferably like Deore gears and decent front suspension.

What is the best make….

1. Specialized
2. Marin
3. Giant
4. Scott
5. Trek

Many thanks

None of the above. The two best brands for female specific bikes right now are Norco and Kona… both have been leaning on their female pro riders for the last few years working to design rides for the ladies.

Of the one’s you’ve listed, none are really big on female specific mtb’s but, of the ladies that I know who ride, they ALL love Giant for some reason and I’d say Trek would come up behind them.

Marin makes really nice bikes but they tend to be a bit heavy and bulky feeling. In terms of performance, they’re probably the best you’ve listed. Specialized is very good too but I wouldnt really buy anything below the Pitch except for maybe one of the “P” series bikes. Scott, aside from the Gambler and the Voltage, is way overpriced… though they do make some really lightweight rides, just way to pricey for what they are.
